Arizona Bioethics Network
One SLHI brief got the ball rolling, and a few years later nearly 150 practitioners and over 90 different organizations have become involved with the Arizona Bioethics Network. Established in FY2010 in response to an outpouring of feedback from the publication and its foll0w-up conference, the Arizona Bioethics Network (ABN) has seen dramatic growth, outstripping its long-established peers in other states.
What began as a community of practice supporting practical health care ethics, improved decision-making, and positive conflict management, has now become a network of expanded connections, dozens of shared cases designed to enrich ethics practice, and a vibrant culture that is engaged in moving forward.
ABN in FY2012:
- Maintained an ongoing dialogue of Arizona-specific and national ethics topics through the ABN website and group “listserv” email.
- Developed and hosted eight well-received EthicsTalk webinars on topics ranging from ethics consultation liability to the challenges of “revolving door syndrome. To-date, ABN’s EthicsTalks have had more than 360 unique participants.
- Developed and hosted its second annual conference, Ethics at the Bedside – Making the Hard Decisions, increasing attendance by 40% over FY2011.
- Established developmental working committees, including the committee that succeeded in producing a new website with built-in community of practice software that helped nearly double the number of registered members.
- More than doubled the number of organizations involved in the network.
For its third year, ABN will begin its transition to independence, with management provided by The Lincoln Center of Applied Ethics at Arizona State University, in order to implement plans for expanding the presence and impact of clinical bioethics, as well as new development in public and population ethics. A core of dedicated individuals – policy leaders, social workers, lawyers, nurses, doctors, administrators, religious leaders and more – will continue to build upon ABN’s established foundation.
